"Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" is one of a number of songs co-written by singer Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin. There have been several covers of this song, among them are John's duet with the late George Michael and Clay Aiken's cover during American Idol, season 2 and with lookalike Michael Sandecki on season 5. Elton John gave Clay permission to perform the song.
John recorded this ballad in 1974 for his album Caribou. Among the singers providing backup were 2 members of The Beach Boys and Toni Tenille of the Captain and Tenille. The
single topped the charts in England, the United States and other countries. The song was covered by Roger Daltrey, The Winans, Oleta Adams, Joe Cocker, Garth Brooks, and most recently by Miley Cyrus.
Elton John recently announced his retirement and a final tour this year. He and Taupin released an album of their songs, performed by various artists and called "Revamp: The Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin ."
