Even though the hymn mentions being in a garden with Jesus, Austin Miles wrote the hymn in a basement without windows or gardens while waiting for film to develop. That's not a very inspirational location, but the hymn has been around for nearly a century.
The hymn was based on Mary Magdalene's encounter with Jesus on the first Easter.
A variety of artists have performed or recorded "In the Garden." From Elvis to country singers Anne Murray and Brad Paisley. Mark Lowry, a Christian comedian and singer, has recorded this hymn.
Hope you enjoyed this post. What is your favorite garden or flower related song?

Cynthia,
ReplyDelete"In the Garden" is a beautiful hymn that always reminds me of attending church as a child. Elvis' version is so heart touching. You featured a number of artists covering this old gospel hymn in your playlist - cool idea! The backstory of how this song came to be isn't all the inspiring but the lyrics truly are. BTW, the link you shared doesn't work and the only way I was able to find it was to use the string of alpha characters after the equal symbol. I thought you'd like to know. ;) Great song choice, my dear. Have a boogietastic week!
Elvis was such a talent and he could sing in several genres, including gospel. Was so nice listening to his voice in this song - just him and the song.
